Friday Morning Hive Brings You the Good, the Bad and the Icky
GOOD MORNING VIET-HIVE! We hope you stayed up late enough to see the Lady Buckeyes complete a huge 48-19 second half, destroying the Indiana Lady Hoosiers, 73-55 last night in Bloomington. The OSU shooty lady hoops team continued its outstanding start to the 2011-12 season, improving to 20-1 on the season (7-1 in the B1G). Charles brought you all the details last night. Sammy Prahalis and Tayler Hill are quite a pair, each scoring 18 last night. Sammy added nine assists, five rebounds, three steals and a block. Just filling the stat sheet, that’s all. Ashley Adams went double-double with 15 points and 12 rips. This women’s team is fierce, y’all. Show them some love if you’re in the 614 and go to some games.
Shooty hoops Hate Week is here, with the Buckeyes hosting TTUN on Sunday at 1 p.m. You can catch the game on CBS. This is the start of a true gauntlet for Ohio State to close out the regular season. There are two games each remaining against TTUN, Wisconsin and Sparty, as well as home tilts against Purdue and Illinois, a visit to Minnesota, and a trip to Evanston to play Nerdwestern. The Wolvereenies will be without reserve guard Eso Akunne for both contests. Akunne will miss 6-8 weeks following surgery on his left foot scheduled for today. Speaking of the shooty hoops, take a moment each day to vote for William Buford for the Senior Class Award, won’t you? OK, let’s get Hiveward.
Well, Hello Bill Sheridan
Yesterday brought the breaking news from The Lantern (Yes. The Lantern.) that Urban Meyer is rounding out his coaching staff with Bill Sheridan. Bucknuts later said they confirmed The Lantern’s story. Hey, I’m proud of my old paper. As someone who specialized in linebackers, it is unclear how his duties will unfold, because he’s theoretically replacing cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson, who left to join Paul Haynes at Arkansas. Ohio State has yet to make an official announcement, but in case it’s forthcoming soon, here are the important takeaways:
Sheridan worked under Lloyd Carr at Michigan for three years from 2002-2004. He later went on to coach linebackers for the New York Giants, from 2005-2008, which includes a Super Bowl victory in 2007. In 2009, he was promoted to defensive coordinator for the Giants. He was fired at the end of the 2009 season. For the 2010 and 2011 season, he was the linebackers coach for the Miami dolphins under Tony Sparano. In addition to Michigan and his stint in the NFL, Sheridan has worked for Notre Dame, Michigan State, Army, Cincinnati and Maine. His son, Nick, was a quarterback at Michigan from 2008-2009.
Here at OHD we simply hope Sheridan is adept at coaching defensive backs on getting to jump balls before the receiver does.
Buckeye Family Mourns D.C. Koehl
In sadder news, OSU assistant SID D.C. Koehl passed away Thursday morning. Koehl was a fixture in the sports information department, having arrived as a manager under legendary OSU basketball coach Fred Taylor way back in 1968. I was two years old then and I’m sure many of you were not yet on this earth. Combined with the loss of associate athletic director Bill Jones on Jan. 11, the passing of former offensive coordinator Joe Daniels Dec. 4, and the death of Earle Bruce’s wife Jean on Dec. 16, this has been a rough couple of months for the Buckeye family, particularly for those connected to the Buckeye football team. Koehl’s domain was football stats and volleyball, so last year’s national championship is rendered that much more special, since D.C. got to experience it. But it’s also sad that he won’t be around to see the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State. Our thoughts and prayers are with D.C.’s family and friends.
Ohio State Folk Pay Respects to JoePa; Robinson DERPs
Keeping with the somber theme of the above item, Urban Meyer, Luke Fickell and Kirk Herbstreit were among the Ohio State dignitaries who attended the memorial service for Joe Paterno at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday. According to Ben Jones of StateCollege.com, former Nitt receiver running back quarterback utility infielder Michael Robinson used the service to very inappropriately troll Urban Meyer. Here’s the quote from Robinson about Paterno:
“He didn’t lie to me. Not once. He didn’t offer me any money or cars, like some schools did”
Jones tweeted that Robinson looked at Meyer when he said “money or cars.” It’s possible that Robinson looking Meyer’s way was just coincidence, but only he would know for sure. I doubt Meyer offered Robinson any cars or money to come to Bowling Green, which is where Meyer coached through Robinson’s freshman year at Penn State (2002). At any rate, if it was a dig at Ohio State it was only the least appropriate setting for it that ever existed.
Yay, More College Footbaw! (Kind of)
The 2012 Senior Bowl from exotic Mobile takes place Saturday at 4 p.m. EST on the NFL Network. Several departing Buckeyes are involved for the North squad, including center Mike Brewster, left tackle Mike Adams, running back Boom Herron and receiver DeVier Posey. Brewster raised some eyebrows with his practice battles against Mike Martin of TTUN in the last week, while Adams has been impressing scouts. Some have tweeted that he’d be a Top 20 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft. We’ve heard some reports about Posey dropping passes, but these things happen when you lose most of your senior season. Posey was always more of a gamer anyway and should get drafted on Day Two. Things have been kind of quiet about Herron.
Hive Hodgepodge
Wisconsin released a report about the alleged misconduct by former associate athletic director John Chadima. And they are about as icky as you would imagine. Here’s a direct link to the report… Greg Schiano has left Rutgers to become the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yeah, that’s what we said too, at first, but in truth, I think Schiano might be pretty well suited for the job. It’s a tough time for Schiano’s assistants to be out of work, and for Rutgers recruits, who will now be scrambling to figure out what their best option is—to stay at Rutgers and hope for the best or to fall back on previous schools of interest…Growing up a Dolphins fan (long story), I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the years Dan Marino had with the Marks Brothers, Duper and Clayton. Duper had a truly horrific health scare recently but his prognosis is very good. Hang in there, Super Duper…This is a very detailed and well-constructed, epic blog by Aaron Portzline about the current state of the Columbus Blue Jackets…OMG, the first new track released by ABBA in 18 years!
