The OSU baseball team got the weekend off to a good start on Friday with a 7-2 victory over Michigan. On Saturday the Buckeyes were down 6-3 when they came up to bat in the 9th inning of the first game of a doubleheader. The Buckeyes put together three runs in the 9th to take the game to extra innings before winning 7-6 in the 11th. Game two of the doubleheader also went to extra innings but this time it only took until the 10th inning for the Buckeyes to pull out the victory, 4-3. The three wins marked the first time that the baseball Buckeyes had swept Michigan in 15 years. The wins also move OSU into third place in the Big Ten. Freshman first baseman/pitcher Josh Dezse picked up his second Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honor and his fourth Freshman of the Week honor this season. Dezse hit .600 for the weekend, scored 3 runs and drove in 6 runs while also taking to the mound to close the first two games of the series, earning the win in game two.
The men’s volleyball team defeated Lewis 3-1 on Wednesday in the first round of the MIVA tournament and defeated Loyola-Chicago 3-1 on Saturday to win their fourth straight tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. Shawn Sangrey, John Klanac, and Jason Tobkin represented the Buckeyes on the All-Tournament team and Steven Kehoe was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. Only four teams compete in the NCAA men’s volleybal tournament and the Buckeyes will face Penn State on Thursday, May 5th with a spot in the National Championship game on the line. Ohio State has faced the Nittany Lions twice this season, winning both games. Penn State is hosting the NCAA Championships so expect a hostile crowd trying to spur Penn State on to getting revenge.
The Ohio State men’s tennis team was in Madison this weekend for the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes swept Michigan State, Illinois, and Minnesota 4-0 each on the way to their sixth consecutive Big Ten Tournament, and eighth overall. The Buckeyes did not lose a single point all weekend and join the 2005-2010 football, 2005-2010 women’s basketball and 1982-1987 men’s golf team as the only OSU teams to win six straight Big Ten titles. The Buckeyes now await the announcement of the NCAA tournament bracket and will begin their quest for a national championship on May 14th or 15th. OSU will enter the tournament ranked 3rd in the country, behind Virginia and Southern Cal.
