Ohio State Gets Spot Commitment From Firestone’s Tommy Brown

You may still be watching the shooty hoops in spite of the fact that Ohio State is no longer playing. While you’re enjoying the Final Four, Tommy Brown — a lineman from Akron’s Firestone HS — received an offer from Ohio State while on an unofficial visit and committed immediately.

Tommy Brown was on Ohio State’s radar for a little while.  Yet, while the Buckeyes eventually made moves on Chase Farris, Antonio Underwood, Brian Bobek and Chris Carter Jr, nothing seemed to be happening on the Tommy Brown front.  This changed today.  Tommy was on an unofficial visit, which is nothing really major considering he’s been down to Ohio State before.  However, on this visit, he and his parents got an in-depth tour of everything.  I think this might be the first real exposure for his parents, not Tommy.  While there, he watched film with Jim Bollman and eventually met with Jim Tressel.  Tressel talked, as he seems to like to do, about the importance of life development, then segued into college football as it is the 800lb gorilla in the room for any such discussion.  Tressel told Tommy that he wanted Tommy at Ohio State, that he had an offer.  Tommy committed instantly to an excited Jim Tressel.

The reasons why are not too hard to discern.  Tommy Brown is an Ohioan, a lifelong Ohio State fan and has a great respect for the coaching staff and how they approach things.  He had the offer he wanted and committed on the spot.

I was careful with Tommy’s position.  I said “lineman”, not offensive or defensive lineman.  All signs seem to point to Tommy Brown being an offensive lineman for Ohio State and maybe figuring in at the tackle position.  Still, I wonder if he may end up on the defensive line, as that was discussed early into his recruitment.

For now, I celebrate getting a commitment from Firestone1 HS as I can not recall the last kid that came from there to Ohio State on a football scholarship.  He will complement the commitment of Elyria HS standout Chase Farris well.  Now, if Ohio State can manage to find a recruit from Reynoldsburg and Marietta, I would have a college friend “quadrifecta”… or something.

Brief film is below.

I like that “college friend ‘quadrifecta’” thing, though I can assure you it gets more and more tenuous as the years roll by. My version of it is to watch for the rare Buckeye that comes from my HS’s conference of solidly middling-sized schools – the only ones that come to mind right away are Clyde’s Tim Anderson and Sandusky Perkins’ Brandon Schnittker. No Oak Harbor Rockets so far – though there was one a long time ago that played at B-W for Lee T.

Welcome to the family, young Mr. Brown.

    FIRESTONE!!

As I am most likely the only person who reads this blog that went to Firestone I will say, Vico, the fact that you cannot recall the last Falcon to get a Buckeye football scholarship is because if there ever has been one it was decades ago.

For what its worth the last few Buckeyes to come from the conference Firestone plays in did not end up being to shabby. You might have heard the names Winfield, Pittman and Wells(of the Beanie variety) before. Also I loved the quadfecta, glad my school could finally get one on.

And Tressel says yet again “F U Seantrelle Henderson”….. oh yea, Pappa Henderson too.
