Intervening Lane Kiffin Coverage Inspires Buckeye Comeback At Purdue

Lane Kiffin, inspiring comeback victory over Purdue
Lane Kiffin, willing Ohio State's comeback victory over Purdue
It’s been awhile since I covered the ol’ shooty hoops on this here blog, but with reason.  Now that the tackle football is on the backburner for the meantime, Buckeye fans everywhere must now watch the two shooty hoops teams to get their fill of Buckeye athletics.  Tonight, the Buckeyes traveled to West Lafayette to take on the 6 ranked Purdue Boilermakers, who had just lost their first game of the entire season at Wisconsin 3 days ago.  Tonight, behind the stirring coverage of Lane Kiffin becoming the new head coach at USC, the Buckeyes put Purdue’s losing streak at 2, besting the Boilermakers 70-66.

Lane Kiffin news was in short supply in the first half, and Purdue capitalized on its absence.  Play was sloppy by both sides, but Purdue’s unusual carelessness with the ball allowed Ohio State to take an early lead midway through in spite of the absence of Lane Kiffin news.  However, this Kiffin-less momentum for Ohio State was shortlived.  Ohio State had conceded baseline corner 3s the entire first half, but Purdue didn’t always capitalize.  They soon did.  An 11-0 run followed after the 10 minute mark in the first half and Robbie Hummel simply caught fire.  He ended the first half with 29 points, tying the entire production from Ohio State by intermission.  Purdue held a 41-29 lead.

Ohio State made adjustments.  In particular, David Lighty was assigned Hummel-sitting duties for just about the entire second half.  Hummel’s production dropped shortly thereafter.  In the discussion for a Big Ten and NCAA record 3pt effort in this game, Hummel had a quiet second half, finishing with 35 points for the game.  While Ohio State had made the necessary adjustment to Hummel short of shooting him, as Thad Matta jokingly suggested to Jeanine Edwards at the half, the Buckeyes — absent breaking news on Lane Kiffin — could not make any further inroads into the Purdue lead.  They had made the adjustment, but were still trailing by anywhere from 8 to 12 points through most of the second half.

Then, help arrived.  After a TV timeout, ESPN promised to return with “MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS”.  Lane Kiffin was coming to USC.  For the Buckeyes, help had arrived.  Alas: inspiration, a reason to believe.  While Oil Slick and the other guy waxed ecstatic about Lane Kiffin, the Buckeyes realized that Lane Kiffin bolting Tennessee only after one year meant that anything was possible, including clawing back against the Boilermakers.  When the broadcast crew further reported that Monte Kiffin was going to follow his son to USC, the Buckeyes knew they had he inside track to victory.  The Buckeyes huddled after the timeout, went all in, and concluded the game with a 19-4 run after the Kiffin news broke, and left West Lafayette with a Purdue victory.

Oh, it doesn’t hurt that the Buckeyes capitalized on some Purdue turnovers in the waning moments of the game.  Further, Evan Turner and William Buford really carried the Buckeyes on offense.  Turner especially closed the game with momentum, finishing with 32 points, a lot of which came on free throws after drawing fouls.  Buford had 19 on the game.

Oh, and did you know that Lane Kiffin is leaving Tennessee for USC?

Lane Kiffin is a sorry mother f*cker. I’m a student at The University of Tennessee, and you should see the outrage that is being expressed by students. The student body believed in him, believed that he would return Tennessee back to the level of the elite college football programs. Now, the program is f*cked for at least another year while it searches for another head coach.

There is no other reasonable explanation for this win, Vico. The Kiffin Effect, far more profound than The Butterfly Effect.

Re the Kiffin ado; it seems like USC is getting Pete Carroll Lite. Well, Lane certainly learned at the knee of his master.
