Ohio State returns to the Rose Bowl to begin 2010 and leaves with a victory, marking the first since 1997 and only the 2nd after the 1974 Rose Bowl against USC.

As it stands right now, there’s not a lot of game analysis I care to do while I have a Dixie Beer in my hand1. Pryor started off hot and seemed to get befuddled after Oregon made some defensive adjustments. Later, the game appeared to slow down for him and Pryor and his receivers seemed to recognize the need for quick passes and inside position. Later, when Oregon missed a field goal in a situation where they probably should’ve gone for the first down, Ohio State was able to turn it into their death knell. Ohio State ran out the remaining 5+ minutes and a frustrated Chip Kelly could only waste his 3 timeouts in vain.

This post is brief, as I simply want to cherish the moment as I type from my parents home in Los Angeles, California, 25 minutes outside of Pasadena. This was a Mother-Father-Son Rose Bowl for me, and a moment that I, like you, will remember fondly for some time. So, in lieu of serious analysis, let this be a thanks to seniors like Kurt Coleman, Doug Worthington, Austin Spitler, Jimmy Cordle, Jake Ballard2 and company. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. For the rest of you, enjoy it. Drink (responsibly3 ) and, well, happy new year.  CONSUME.

Lastly, I just want to say that I don’t say it enough, but I love you guys.

This was a great win tonight. As a longtime Ohio State fan, I was fed up with losing in big games. Glad the streak ended tonight.

Pryor played well, glad Tressel let him play a lot more than most of the season. Hope next year we’ll be in the BCS title game.

Great job all season long Vico, your coverage helped get me through the year of ups and downs, most especially the off-season work you do with BKAB and building the anticipation for the coming season. This wasn’t the magical 2002 year, but things haven’t been this satisfying since we won that national title. It’s been a long time coming, but change has come to the OSU program.

I would like to whip that Greek SOB`s ass that on Fox Sports that said Oregon will kill us, cant remember his name , Papos Smear of something like that !!! …

Vico, you’ve done a great job all year; put off the analysis until you’ve enjoyed your beverage(s) and family time. I tell ya, this is the most satisfying win in quite a while. Great job Tressel & staff and to the Team. Seniors; thank you, thank you, thank you.

Great game. Even greater seeing the look on Mark May’s face. Congratulations, my beloved Buckeyes.

Congrats to the Bucks! Great job all year Vico!
See, I told you guys we needed to trust Tressel and the staff. (Wink).
What was even more fun was watching a group of LSU fans make excuses for the loss to PSU in my living room.
An actual quote: “The bad field was the reason we lost, it took our speed away. They (CapitalOne bowl officials) should be investigated ”
    Loved it.

Awesome , awesome game……………Tressel came out guns a blazin………….I honestly hope its a sign of things to come in 2010. Fuck the nay sayers………..

I wonder how much time of posession is overrated to Chip Kelly now………lol. Good defense , ball control and sound run game will put you in position to beat any team…………….yes ……any team.

By the way…………The Big 10 as a whole had a great day yesterday………….Northwestern had 6 turnovers and still should have beat Auburn………..oh well.

I hope Sparty can do a miracle…………losing 7 starters is gonna be a tough obsticle to overcome, but it is Bowl season.

I also am rooting for Iowa…………..

Vico! We did it! First thing is first. I want to give a BIG high-five to all the commentators and analysts who said Oregon would score a thousand points and walk away with the win because of their speed, and that the Buckeyes just could not compete at the Ducks’ level of play. Eat crow, eat dirt, eat a pile of crap!

Now….GO BUCKS!!!!! Great game to watch and yell at while watching! Pryor, though I have not liked much of his play had FINALLY showed us that he can be the leader that we need him to be. Great job!

Congrats to the Big 10 who showed up yesterday. Penn State did great given the conditions and Northwestern in my eyes, won the game but had stupid turnovers and a shanker of a kicker.

And if Tressels’ speech at the end of the game last night was any indication of things to come…..I will be voting for him in 2012……

I’m out here in Oregon post-game surrounded by gracious and not-so-gracious Ducks fans. I am so proud to be a Buckeye!!!!!!! We played a game that was not just Big Ten but took the Pac 10 on as well. AND WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Coach Tressel and Pryor and the entire Ohio State football team! ( BTW, the Oregonian says today the Ducks need to recruit players like Pryor!)

Now that I finally have Internet access again (SO frustrating to not be in on the liveblog, etc.), a few observations:

    - I’ve said before that thanks to bloggers and DVR, I basically never watch any GameDay-type stuff anymore…well, I caught a little last night and Holy Cow, Lee Corso doesn’t belong on TV. I’m not making fun of his stroke when I say that – it’s more a question of his personal dignity at this point, as well as the implied level of ability ESPN expects from its on-air personnel. Embarrassing for both parties.

    - It was striking to see how utterly confident/arrogant Chip Kelly was in his pregame on-field interview – he said, in so many words, that his offense was basically unstoppable and that it didn’t matter at all what anybody’s defense in general did, or that Ohio State’s defense in particular had had a few weeks to prepare. Put that together with his insistence that TOP is an utterly meaningless – not just overrated, but MEANINGLESS – statistic, and it should be obvious that it’s not just “Tresselball” that has its drawbacks as a coaching philosophy. I mean, the final 5:10 ticking off with the ball in the Buckeye’s hands was an awfully important period of time in which to possess the ball, right? Is there no room for contingency in Kelly’s mind?

    - Masoli seems not to share that utter confidence in Kelly’s offensive genius – he’s quoted in the AP article as wondering why they didn’t throw the ball more, and even says “I wasn’t calling the plays”. That’s pretty deserving of a Nelson-style point-and-laugh right there – if he doesn’t know why they didn’t throw the ball more, then one has to wonder if maybe he got concussed early on and doesn’t remember what actually happened when they did try to throw. The Ducks had like three really successful pass plays out of 20 attempts, with a long of 23 yards.

    - Of course, it may just be that Oregon really is every bit as good as everybody – even themselves – thinks they are, which has its own implications when it comes to assessing the quality of the Buckeyes. Not to put too much stock in polls, but it would seem that we’re going to end up ranked 5th, leapfrogging Oregon, Cincinnati (ha!), and the BSU-TCU loser. In the last four games, we beat three of the BCS’ top 13. We beat FIVE 10-win teams this year. Not bad, especially in a “rebuilding year” marked by injuries and inconsistency on the O-line and TP’s growing pains.

    - And now, the sky’s the limit: Championship Game or Bust in 2010. I wouldn’t be surprised if, per the BBC, we end up ranked #1 preseason. Whatever it ends up being, I also won’t be surprised to see that if we make it we end up facing Oregon again.

    - LOVED Herbstreit’s “Jim Tressel is like a python” comment at the end.

Jim Tressel has a dogged approach to his coaching modus operendi. He finds a weakness and keeps calling the same play over and over again until his opponent stops it. In this case, throwing the ball early and often seemed to work against Oregon, and it ultimately led to its defeat. Also, the time of possession was important, perhaps the most important stat of all. Without that kind of domination on that front offensively, we couldn’t have won this game. I am eager to see what’s in store for Ohio State next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start the season in the top three along with Oregon and Alabama. It’s Glendale or bust again, boys and girls!

  13. 13 Todd (Not Boeckman)

I’ve said it before and I will say it again….Playcalling is overrated. Execution of whatever play is called is more important. Yes, Uncle Jim came out with guns blazing. But if Terrel can’t execute the passing game, it wouldn’at matter. So yes, kudos to trusting TP, but bigger kudos to TP for proving he could do it. If you pay attention to tOSU football, you know that Tressel isn’t afraid to throw, he doesn’t trust the execution. He didn’t early on with Troy and he didn’t this year with TP. BUt once the qb earns his trust, all bets are off (sorry Bruce). ANy way, I only have one last thing to say:

Eat shit and Die, Mark May and all you other idiots who think that Ohio State has no team speed because we are from Ohio.

  14. 14 Todd (Not Boeckman)

That should’ve read Tressel isn’t afraid to throw if he DOES trust the execution. sheesh, you’d think I was still drunk from the game.

  15. 15 Ken

“sheesh, you’d think I was still drunk from the game.”

TnB, that would be perfectly acceptable. After all, our bowl-season victory celebrations have been probably pretty muted recently. Speaking for myself, ….

THANK YOU FOR NOTICING THE SHITTY BAND UNIFORMS FOR OREGON!!! Sorry for the capslock.
