Rob Rose, Duron Carter Ruled Ineligible for Rose Bowl?
Nothing is official yet, but this sounds like it’d be pretty lame if it’s true. Sources have told ESPN that Duron Carter, the freshman #4 WR for the Buckeyes, and the oft-troubled senior defensive lineman Rob Rose will be academic casualties for the Rose Bowl Game on January 1st.
Ohio State wide receiver Duron Carter and defensive end Rob Rose are ineligible to play in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi against No. 7 Oregon, a source tells ESPN.com.
Carter, the son of former Ohio State and NFL star Cris Carter, who is an ESPN studio and NFL analyst, ranks third on the team in receiving yards (176) and tied for fifth in receptions (13). He appeared in all 12 regular-season games as a true freshman and served as the team’s No. 4 wideout behind DeVier Posey, Dane Sanzenbacher and Ray Small.
Rose played in 11 games as a reserve for the Buckeyes, recording 10 tackles, three for loss, and two sacks.
A team spokeswoman couldn’t confirm Tuesday that both Carter and Rose are out for the game. Ohio State faces Oregon on Jan. 1 (ABC, 4:30 p.m. ET) in Pasadena, Calif.
The losses aren’t enormous, per se. Carter is one of our better options at WR, but the passing game for the Buckeyes doesn’t necessarily spread out the completions among its WRs. Sure, Carter is third in receptions, with 13. Posey and Sanzenbacher, options 1 and 2 respectively, account for 78/150 completions and 1226/1984 receiving yards. In a similar vain, losing Rob Rose means losing depth at the deepest position on the team.
Long story short, this is kinda lame, but it could be worse. If these are the only two academic casualties, I’ll consider the losses to not be a travesty.
Not a total surprise about Rose, since he is “oft-troubled”. I’m guessing that Chris Carter is a wee bit disappointed in his lad’s effort, or lack of.
