Cordle’s Injury Among Shakeups For Toledo Game

There’s a few things to consider before getting fully braced for Saturday’s game against Toledo, to be held in the Greatest City of Cleveland.

The big news is that Jim Cordle, the veteran of the offensive line, will be sidelined for 3-4 weeks with an ankle injury.  The exact cause of the injury is not known, though Cordle had complained about soreness in the ankle for some time.

The loss of someone who is probably the leader of the unit would be devastating, but the offensive line returns to the field after what I thought was essentially a good showing against USC.  Further, Cordle’s injury opens the door for highly-touted Brew Crew member JB Shugarts to get his first career start alongside running mate Michael Brewster.  I like this move better than I like Shugarts playing left tackle.  I had always thought of Shugarts as a right tackle when he came in, and that’s the position he played in high school.  This is Shugarts’ time to shine, but the opportunity does not come without a stern warning for Buckeye fans:

If Shugarts struggles, or just if the coaches want to see someone else at right tackle, Tressel said they could move right guard Bryant Browning out to tackle, where he started all 13 games last season. In that scenario, Andrew Moses or left tackle Andrew Miller could play guard.

Do not want.

  • Duron Carter is your no. 3 wide receiver and, well, it was only a matter of time.  You knew Duron Carter was going to continue his ascent on the depth chart as the season progressed and that it was going to be a quick one.  He does all the little things right and, having correctly identified the all out blitz on the first play of the doomed 2 minute drill against USC, may have scored the game winning TD if Terrelle Pryor had just simply looked to his right.
  • On that note, Taurian Washington is the no. 6 WR.
  • Mike Adams is back in the two-deep.
  • We finally have a third-string tailback, and it’s Jordan Hall.  Jaamal Berry is nursing what seems to be a minor hamstring injury.

Bryant Browning at TACKLE AGAIN!?!?! Good lord….please no! Wasn’t Saturday night enough punishment? I was just reading how we never wanna see another “Dave” play where he is the pulling guard again, and now this?

Jimmy Vulmer just called in and said “I mean CEM….OHHHHN!”

    Shugarts will be fine!

Boy, do I hope that Shugarts has a a great game, for all the right reasons, of course. OK, regarding Browing at RT; haven’t we ‘been-there, done-that’, hence he’s at RG for now?

Somewhat related; I’d read on one of the various OSU blogs that Browning seemed to have trouble with his pulls. I couldn’t understand the logic of having a slllooowwlly developing play to the left with a pulling guard who evidently couldn’t get the pulling thing down, and to the side of the line where we have a LT that seems to lack “lead in his pants” as a power blocker. Did I miss something with this?

I like the idea of having a somewhat athletic LT (Miller) to protect Pryor’s blind side, but is he really a power blocker? Miller, not Pryor. It would make sense to me to run these (I’d rather not run them, to be honest) plays to the right, where Browning and (now) Shugarts can knock folks on their asses, and have Boren make the pull to clean up. Or can’t Boren pull for shit, either. I need some advice here, I’m struggling with the concept.

    Appreciatively,
    Ken

“In that scenario, Andrew Moses or left tackle Andrew Miller could play guard.”

What team takes their STARTING LEFT TACKLE and puts him at right guard? Only way that should happen in Adams outplays Miller at LT.

    Ken,

If it occurs, we’ve abandoned the forward pass and would rather pull the right guard.

    Poe,

As long as we decide not to pull both guards on the same play. I’ve seen it happen. In high school. My high school. While I was qb’ing…

Toledo brings more than you can block, and more than you can read…………..per Tress himself.

O-line better be on its A-game ( if they have one )

And Pryor had better make better reads before the snap, Tress admits he isn’t quite there yet.

If things really get bad, I just hope to God Toledo has its traditional point shaving practices going on in full force — and that they are betting against themselves.

Did anybody watch Miami vs GT last night? It was a testament to what a great OC could do for us. Mark Whipple had the Canes hitting on all cylinders, very in sync across the line. Jacory Harris looked like Tom Brady out there. Very confident.
We will have our hands full with them next year. We will probably need to score at least 8 points or something and hold them to 7.

    Score points……….pppphhaaaaaaa!!!!!!

We kick field goals JohnBoy…………we kick field goals. Thats all Tress plays for. Until he proves his base wrong, Tress plays for field position and field goals.

Or unless our D runs one back for points…………
