Willie Mobley Will Transfer to UCLA

Willie Mobley, checking out.
Well, camp has ended with a bang.

Right as word surfaced that Mike Adams will be suspended for the first two games of the 2009 season, we learn that Willie Mobley will be the first exit from the “Block O” recruiting class of 20081.  After some musings via Facebook postings, some media outlets eventually picked it up and confirmed it.  There’s no word yet from Ohio State’s athletic department.

The transfer certainly caught me off guard, and strikes me as an odd move to make at an odd time.  Mobley has already used his redshirt and made the move with September around the corner.  His options were kind of limited if he wanted to make the switch.  To his credit, Mobley has given assurances that this move comes as a result of no ill will towards his teammates, the coaching staff, and even the state of Ohio.  It seems that he wants to be closer to his family, who just moved to Los Angeles.

As it is, Mobley’s departure will make it easier for the Buckeyes to round out this year’s recruiting class.  UCLA should be getting a pretty good player and I can at least hope that there really is no ill will on Mobley’s part and that there’s nothing suspicious beyond the surface of this story.  Godspeed.

  1. If we ignore that Shaq Rowell never qualified. []
