Ray Small and Robert Rose Return; Boren Injured?

No shirt collar can contain Justin Boren
After some drama through the week regarding academic qualification issues, senior Tarblooders and Buckeyes Ray Small and Robert Rose have returned to campRay Small does not tweet lies, certainly not to Duron Carter.  It seems that Ray Small’s father, Ken, was on target when he said Ray needed a grade to be changed in order to qualify.  Expect both to participate in the full contact drills by the middle of the week.

Secondly, and more importantly, there’s a buzz afoot that Justin Boren got injured today.  Details are sketchy at the moment, but a post on Bucknuts’ forum says he’s sprained, if lightly, his MCL.  Fortunately that is not the ACL, and it seems like people are discussing it more as a “tweak” than a sprain.  It should only sideline him for a week or two.  Still, I think the only more unfortunate injury to the Buckeyes right now would be something sidelining Terrelle Pryor.  Boren will be that important to the Buckeyes in 2009, and the play of the offensive line is vital.  The Buckeyes may piece together a pretty good offensive line in 2009 (oh please oh please oh please), but it won’t be a very deep one in all likelihood.  Details about Boren may be forthcoming.  Update: Ken Gordon chimes in via Twitter, saying it’s not serious (good), but Boren will still miss a few weeks (dammit). Update: 3 weeks, maybe (hopefully) less.

I am not too worried about this injury. Sucks that he misses a couple of weeks, but remember, he does have starting experience!

Very true, but I really think he could use the weeks to fine tune pass protection, which was the one area that I’ve read where he stands to improve. Not a catastrophic blow, but still a blow. You build a lot of cohesion as a unit during camp.

I’m wondering what happens next: Cordle to LG, Shugarts at RT?

How about Shugarts @ LG. Him and Admas next to each other? Run left!

This could be blessing in disguise, give Shugarts enough reps on the line to justify displacing Cordle or Browning, and finally get the Big 3 (Adams, Brew, Shugs) playing on the line as Sophs, with either Cordle/Browning filling in the last spot once Boren Returns, so that it would look like Adams – Boren – Brewster – Browning/Cordle/Shugarts – Shugarts / Cordle.

I think this will turn out to be a good OL. Just give em time!

I’m a little surprised there’s not more talk (especially among the Buckeyes’ detractors) about how shady this whole Rose/Small thing is? Waiting for grades to be changed? Why didn’t they just get passing grades in the first place?

I made a comment about just that in the delicious.com feed regarding Small waiting on a grade to be changed since, well, why did it have to be changed? http://delicious.com/ourhonordefend/Ray-Small (second one down)

Rittenberg is saying Connor Smith is going to fill in for Justin Boren. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Connor Smith? Um I am not sure either. But maybe he will step up!

The comment about Keith Wells on that blog Vico is ridiculous. Duane Long sometimes likes to get crap started. My brother watched the practice the other night on BRN. He said Wells looked awesome! Gets off the ball fast, has good speed, and has long arms. Keith Wells will be fine!

If Boren was still playing for Michigan, I’d detest that smug face.

Now I LOVE it! Thanks for making the right choice, Justin.

Duane Long is and has, always been an ass wipe. It was Duane Long who said Prescott Burgess was the best lb safety to come out of Ohio in 28 years. It is Duane Long who feels he is the defacto recruiting coordinator for OSU and whines like a baby when they don’t agree with him. I t is Duane Long who attacks any player who develops over time rather making an immediate impact. Duane…get a real job.
