Captains Named; Adams Suspended
First, the captains have been named. Kurt Coleman got the nod as everyone knew he would. Doug Worthington is no surprise either. Austin Spitler comes as a bit of a surprise. He’s a 5th year senior with no shortage of tenure in the program and respect among his peers, so perhaps it shouldn’t be so surprising. However, since he is locked in a playing time battle with Etienne Sabino, I would not have pegged him to be a captain. After the Monday scrimmage, my good friend/freshman roommate and two-time district qualifier at Reynoldsburg called me and we discussed who we thought the captains would be. We got Coleman and Washington, but punted around other ideas, such as 3 defensive captains to one offensive captain, Pettrey as a possible captain and other possibilities. I don’t think Spitler came up. We already had two defensive players we thought would be locks.
The 4th captain is a bit of a surprise since, well, there is no 4th captain. Coleman, Worthington and Spitler are the 3 captains for 2009, marking the first time since 2002 that the captains were all from defense. Yes, I set that up, praying for a best case scenario.
Elsewhere, we think we have a reason for Adams’ fall from grace in fall camp. He began camp as the first string left tackle, was being rotated in and out of the 3rd team and now, we learn, he will apparently be suspended for Navy and USC. The good news, at least, is that all reports that suggest that Adams was just being outplayed by Miller should be qualified to account for why he was suspended. I think I know why, having come across the rumor about 4 days ago and now (seemingly) getting confirmation with word of the suspension. But, since I have no credibility here to jeopardize, I think I’ll wait until someone else spills the beans. Disappointing, but — at the least — a silver lining. I’d still love to have him for USC, though.

I’m almost glad that he’s suspended, because that means he’s not hurt. The frustration was really mounting that such a physically talented player could be outplayed by Andrew Miller. And it also means that we can hopefully have him for the remainder of the year. I’m dying to know what it’s for though.
I really don’t get this captain thing. When I think of the idea of captains, it’s to keep someone accountable on the field, someone that can lead through example, inspiration, or just some kind of leadership qualities. Spitler seems like a nice enough guy, but I just don’t see him carrying the cache to lead. Worthington and Coleman I get, they’ve been vocal, they command attention.
More than anything, it seems like a hollow title to me. Why not break the mold and grab someone from the offense? I think having strong captains is important to the betterment of the team. Pryor has been vocal about how losing close wasn’t good enough (like it was with Lil’ Animal, and the rest). I know he’s a sophomore, but more than anything that’s a great attitude to have.
Maybe this is setting up a system where the 4th captain is picked on a per-game basis?
Can you at least say whether the rumor is some regrettable-but-understandable freshman screw-up, or more of a character-flaw-revealing thing?
If the rumor is true, it’s probably somewhere in between. Use your imagination — you won’t have to use too much of it — to guess what it is.
He should know better after all the kids that have had trouble smoking pot and trying to play for the Buckeyes.
I guess I kind of see where there was no Offensive Captain because when it comes down to it, we already have an offensive captain even if he isn’t going out for the coin toss.
Vico – I’ve heard 2 rumors. One is a very, very, very, very common problem among college students in general. Another was an incident similar to the Tyler Moeller issue, only with the “hater” the one getting hurt (not to the same degree).
This is the bitch of not being able to read the Intertoobz @ work – I had a good guess in mind, come home and bring up 11W, and it says “think Doug Worthington”, and all my fun is gone.
I just hope he’s not an incipient Boone – didn’t Adams have one of these last year too? – because it’s pretty simple: If your drinking is causing you problems, then you have a drinking problem; and DUIs are HUGE problems. QEDMF.
Actually, El Caballo, think “Donald Washington”
Why am I so stupid?
DUI’s are becoming a thing that pops up ever so often. They need to really look out for one another , which I am sure they do………but it only takes 1 time for shit to hit the fan. I hope it was just a lack of poor judgment, nothing more. Mike learn from it and move on.
Yes , I am speculating it was a drinking incident………….
