Hi, Everybody. Hi, Scott McVey.

Scott McVey
The Michigan bloggers have their unique prefixes for posts about recent commitments.  MBN has Incoming; MGoBlog has Hello.  I’m trying to jazz mine up a bit.  I don’t claim McVey’s HS — St. Ignatius — is akin to the Hollywood Upstairs School of Medicology.  At least, I don’t think.

On point, Scott McVey, a linebacker from the state champion St. Ignatius Wildcats in Cleveland, kicked off Christmas in April by committing to Ohio State before the start of the Spring Game.  McVey is a little on the “undersized” side, but is a true workhorse and hard tackler.  However, it his frame that has me a little curious where he ends up at Ohio State.  I don’t think he has the size to play in the middle, but may not have the ideal fluid hips to play off the edge.  I’ll certainly wait until he has a senior season under his belt before making any more observations about him.  After all, there’s surely a reason he had already received offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and many others.

In spite of the regional offers, it was actually Boston College that finished second in the sweepstakes here.  He was a lifelong Ohio State fan, but had some interest in Boston College even to the point of paying a visit a few months ago.  As it turned out, the visit basically confirmed that Ohio State is where he wanted to be.  After the weekend festivities began in earnest yesterday, McVey felt no need to drag out his recruitment any further.  His commitment currently stands for fifth in the class.  He is the second linebacker to commit to Ohio State, following David Durham.

On a side note, I have to think that Ohio State is done recruiting linebackers for 2010 (barring Jordan Hicks committing to Ohio State).  We don’t have a lot of scholarships to hand out in this recruiting class, and we already have several young linebackers on the roster.

I’ve seen this kid play for 3 years now from a sideline perspective and he knows the game and knows how to hit. I’ll give it to you that he is not that for a line backer but then again neither was AJ Hawk. He bulked up from his junior to senior season and think he’s gunna be doing the same for another two years but give this kid 20 more lbs. and I think he’ll be a real force. The one thing I think McVey lacks is speed. He runs a 4.5 but I’ve watched him run after some speedy divsion I Ohio recruits and he has trouble sometime getting to them.
