I don’t follow the daily exploits of recruiting for the Buckeyes, certainly not mid-season. Doing so would be a tacit admission that the current season isn’t very interesting and isn’t worth following1. This even holds for our current verbal commitments, though I’ve thought of doing some kind of Sunday or Monday round-up of what the Buckeye verbals are doing.
That said, I have to make some kind of exception for this.
ESTERO, Fla. — The Estero High football staff gathered in head coach Rich Dombroski’s office late Friday, almost in stunned silence.
Earlier that night, Estero lost to Naples High by 13.
Not by 13 points. By 13 touchdowns. That’s right: Naples 91, Estero 0.
Yep, 91-0. Something you could only accomplish on your Xbox 360 is something Naples HS in Florida accomplished this past Friday night on a Homecoming game against a not-so-good Estero team.Buckeye verbal Carlos Hyde, a nimble-footed powerback in the mold of PJ Hill of Wisconsin. Hyde kicked off the scoring in the first quarter with a 45 yard touchdown run. Two touchdowns and a quarter later, Hyde also was on the receiving end of a 55 yard touchdown toss from QB Juno Prudhomm. The second quarter proved to be where all hell broke loose for Estero. Naples added six more touchdowns after Hyde’s touchdown reception. On one of those six scores, Hyde delivered a crushing blow to Estero’s punter, paving the way for a 55 yard punt return for a touchdown. Hyde’s Eagles team were up 70-0 at half, with Hyde having 4 carries for 74 yards and his lone reception for 55 yards and a TD. With the score so lopsided, Hyde sat for the second half. Naples added 3 second half touchdowns to make the score the most lopsided in Florida football history, if what I’m inferring from what I’ve been reading about the game is correct.
Full stats are here, if interested. I know these Nintendo numbers don’t translate well to college since the competition will be much better, but we can all hope this borderline violent scoring tendencies of Hyde are contagious at the next level.
- That said, I don’t think I could fully defend myself from this accusation, should anyone make it. [↩]
