What to Watch for – Week 4

Posted by Vico in CFB General |

Rather than spend the whole week dissecting how overrated we were, how we can’t block squat, how we can’t penetrate any opposing offensive line, how we can’t get open, how we can’t not stare down a receiver, how we run a double option out of the shotgun on 2nd and long near the red zone with a tree as a QB, how we blow assignments in the secondary and how we have an extra GOTO 10 line in our football programming when it comes to opportunities and catastrophes, I decided to skip all that and look ahead at what I’m going to watch this week.  Besides, 11w has already been saying what I’d be saying anyways.  If you want, you can also allay some of the anxieties by watching my YouTube recap of the least talked about Ohio State victory over Michigan: the 1984 victory that sent the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl where they… sigh…

Anyways, what’s on:

Wednesday

  • Kansas State @ Louisville (ESPN2, 8:00 ET).  Football is played on Wednesday now? Wow.  No surprise that Louisville would have to play at that time slot, but how soon until Rutgers joins them?

Thursday

  • West Virginia @ Colorado (ESPN, 8:30 ET).  It ain’t intramurals, brother…

Friday

  • Baylor @ Connecticut (ESPN2, 8:30 ET). Really? I’m going to watch this game? Really?

Saturday

  • Troy @ Ohio State (BTN, 12:00 ET).  I think the gang and I will head out to the local bar scene to catch this one since the Crimson Tide will be on the road.  God willing, we will beat an SEC JV squad.  We all know that James Laurinaitis is the son of Joe “Animal” Laurinaitis, but did you know that Mike Rotunda’s (yes: Irwin R. Schyster) son is the backup center for Troy? I’m not making this up.  If the first name sounds funky, it’s because Mike Rotunda married the sister of his US Express tag team partner Barry Windham.
  • Iowa @ Pittsburgh (ESPN2, 12:00 ET).  Hell, you give me some Pabst Blue Ribbon and/or Schlitz and I’ll watch anything.
  • Alabama @ Arkansas (ESPN360.com, 12:30 ET).  What the hell.  Since when does an SEC conference game kick off in the noon timeslot.  Dammit, this might complicate the attempts to get the Big Ten Network on in lieu of this game.
  • Florida @ Tennessee (CBS, 3:30 ET).  Again, you give me some PBR or Schlitz and I’ll watch anything.  Tennessee has the radioactive property this year that Michigan had last year.  Given their opening game nightmare against UCLA who then took a week off just to be crushed 59-0 against the Mormons, Tennessee is toxic.  If Florida loses to them, I’d be more than happy.
  • Notre Dame @ Michigan State (ABC, 3:30 ET). Javon Ringer might actually rush for 400 yards in this one.
  • Miami (FL) @ Texas A&M (ABC, 3:30 ET). Return matchup of the drubbing A&M got last year in the Orange Bowl.  I’ll mostly be watching Kyle Field, though.  Aggie fans are great.
  • LSU @ Auburn (ESPN, 7:45 ET). Les Miles is guaranteed to blow it in epic fashion at least once a year.  Further, I’m not sure when the last time LSU beat Auburn in Auburn.  Last year’s game was good, but who am I kidding, I won’t be watching this…
  • Georgia @ Arizona State (ABC, 8:00 ET).  Arizona State lost last week at home to UNLV.  If they take out all their rage on the Bulldogs, I’d consider this a great day for college football.

In a weird kind of way, it’s going to be kind of liberating to watch the MNC chase (and game) this year without having to stress out over it. I’m interested to see what USC does to their competition the rest of the way, though I think I know what it will look like.

Yeah, it’s also helped me with travel plans to visit my folks back in LA. My vacay time aligns with the national title game, and I’ve made the past two winter vacays around watching that game with my dad. No point in watching it now, so it’ll be easier to schedule the cross-country trip.

Besides, it’s killing me that we’ve won 4 Big Ten titles under Tressel and have been to exactly zero Rose Bowls. Here’s hoping that we barnstorm through the Big Ten just to uphold the general order of things: Buckeyes get embarrassed by other elite programs, but dominate its conference just to prove everyone right about the “weakness” of the Big Ten.

How cool is that?? I always admired Irwin Shyster (and Money Inc.) during their hayday.

Alabama v. Arkansas, hmm? What’s the over-under on one of the head coaches in that game taking a new head coaching job by the 3rd quarter?
