What to Watch for – Week 2

Posted by Vico in CFB General |

Very slim pickings this week, but there’s still some games out there that I think are worth watching.  Of course, if you’re curious about coverage, there’s always the WWL with the assist.

Thursday

  • South Carolina @ Vanderbilt (ESPN, 8:30 ET).  I guess this is the revenge game for the Cocks1?  For anyone who follows unwatchable college football, Vanderbilt went into Columbia and beat the Cocks like it owed them money.  Vanderbilt promptly reasserted themselves the next week by hanging on for dear life against Miami of Ohio.  The Smelley-led Cocks will probably try to repay the favor on Thursday night.  I guess South Carolina had to demote themselves to the Big East TV timeslot in order to get national exposure.  I guess I could throw in more phallic puns, but it’s just not worth it.

Friday

  • Navy @ Ball State (ESPN, 7:00 ET). Navy plays the second leg of the series in Muncie, Indiana.  The Cardinals won last year’s matchup 34-31 in Annapolis.  This should be a high-scoring game as both the Middies and Cardinals have high-octane offenses.  I’ll be pulling for the Middies, naturally.  Always root for service academy football where appropriate.

Saturday

  • Ohio @ Ohio State (ESPN, 12:00 ET). This is the only game on ESPN at this timeslot, so basically the entire country is going to get it.  Intrigues of Beanie, Pryor and the defense abound.  Oh, and this should also feature a head-to-head matchup of DeVier Posey against his older brother Joonie Posey.  Joonie is a defensive back for the Bobcats.
  • Miami (OH) @ Michigan (ESPN2, 12:00 ET). This is the only game on ESPN2 at this timeslot, so the entire country is going to have to deal with duel Big Ten rivals on national television at the same time.  If the Wolvereenies didn’t look as putrid against the Utes, I wouldn’t bother with this game.  But now I’m curious…
  • BYU @ Washington (I’m really hoping one of the Fox Sports Channels that I have, 3:00 ET).  The 15th ranked Mormons leave Provo for Seattle and will probably leave having turned up the temperature on Ty Willingham’s already very hot seat.
  • Central Michigan @ Georgia (ESPN360.com, 3:30 ET). Georgia is going to have a somewhat brutal 3 game stretch coming up, and it starts (hopefully) with the Chippewas, a team that’s basically the best of the MAC.  If Dan LeFevour roasts the Bulldogs between the hedges, it would do irreparable damage to the conference.  And I’m all for it.  Go Chippewas!
  • Cincinnati @ Oklahoma (ABC, 3:30 ET).  A matchup between two programs in two unliveable cities (and in the case of Oklahoma, an unliveable state).  Just a really neat matchup that I’m excited to see unfold.
  • Oregon State @ Penn State (ABC, 3:30 ET).  Good ol’ Big Ten v. Pac Ten matchup.  I’ll be rooting for the Nitts this game, but not that enthusiastically.  I’m not sure if I’ll get this game down here, because Ole Miss will be playing at Wake Forest at the same time.  I guess I’m getting that game instead.  Boooooo….
  • Minnesota @ Bowling Green (ESPNU, 7:30 ET). AT Bowling Green? Really? Wow.
  • Miami (FL) @ Florida (ESPN, 8:00 ET).  Fingers are crossed that one of the U players brings a glock with him on the field and busts a cap in Tim Tebow.  That just sounds like something that could happen during this game.
  1. Don’t get my sister started on this nickname.  She lives in Columbia and has to deal with it consistently. []

No love for the Doyt? I’m sure BG will manage to fill up most of that stadium at some point during the first quarter. Though at least half of the students will leave around halftime (regardless of the score) to continue drinking.

Nothing against Bowling Green, more a commentary on Minnesota. Gopher football must not be a big draw if Minnesota doesn’t force Bowling Green to make that a “home game” in Cleveland like what we’re doing to Toledo in a few years. Doyt only seats about 29,000.
