Open Thread: Ohio

The 4th-ranked Buckeyes will be without Heisman hopeful Beanie for the second game of the season against the Ohio Bobcats, but they’ll still be looking pretty to win their 800th game in their program’s history tomorrow in the Shoe.  The game will be on ESPN, so I’ll be in my apartment watching the game live on my state-of-the-art 19″ CRT moving pictures box.  Oh boy, but here are some things to watch for.

  • Evidently everyone has caught on to the fact that DeVier Posey has an older brother playing in the secondary for the Bobcats.  I didn’t know Julian “Joonie” Posey was starting for the Bobcats, however.  My understanding was that he was still on the outside looking in during the preseason, but is listed as a starter now.  Should be interesting.
  • The Buckeyes are 5-0 against the Bobcats with 4 of those games being shutouts.  The only non-shutout in the series was played in 1999, with the Buckeyes winning 40-16.  Most everything else from that season sucked.  The other 4 matchups were played over 100 years ago.
  • The Bobcats lost their program’s all-time leading rusher, Kalvin McRae, to graduation last year.  It showed against Wyoming, as their two backs Chris Garrett and Vince Davidson combined for 36 yards on 14 carries against the Cowboys.  Suffice to say: they might be in even bigger trouble against the Buckeye defense.
  • Theo Scott, the Bobcats’ QB, is the one to watch for when the Bobcats have the ball.  He went 26/35 for 224 yards and the Bobcats’ lone offensive touchdown of the game against Wyoming.  Questions naturally abound: will the Buckeyes manhandle the Bobcats’ receiver threats (Taylor Price and LaVon Brazill) like they should? Will the front four capitalize on what should be a lot more sack opportunities than the Penguins gave them?  Both are necessities if this team is going to be ready for the game next week.
  • Bucknuts doesn’t think the Bobcats will be a pushover.  While that may be true, and while Bowling Green certainly showed last week that anything is possible in the wild, wild world of MAC football, this Bobcats team probably won’t be any good this year.  They seem to be rather one-dimensional, went 6-6 last year and lost their best player (McRae) to graduation.  They may finish in the bottom tier of the MAC East for another year.
  • The Buckeyes are favored by 5 touchdowns, and that’s the line even knowing that Beanie won’t be playing.
  • Speaking of Beanie: Maurice Wells will get the start in lieu of the Beanie.  However, all three tailbacks (MoWells, Herron, Saine) have been splitting time in practice and may even see equal time against the Bobcats.
  • The same probably holds for the quarterbacks (Boeckman, Bauserman and Pryor) if all goes according to plan.
  • More Mike Adams, please.  Mike Adams must FEAST.
  • I thought a very real achilles heel of the Buckeyes’ last season was the coverage team on kickoffs (especially) and punts.  Donte Harden, a redshirt freshman for the Bobcats, returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Wyoming last week.  Hmm.
  • Will most of Ohio University’s campus be rooting for the Buckeyes? I went down to Athens twice as an undergrad — not one of them for Halloween, because that wasn’t my scene — and saw much more Buckeye support there than I did on campus at Ohio State.  There were Buckeye hats and sweatshirts everywhere.  Lovely campus, too.

    TV: “Hi, I’m Pam Ward…”

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo…

Doesn’t she have a Northwestern or Iowa game to call?

Well this has been a dumb 1st quarter so far. Who knew we were capable of a turnover on defense, though?

Looks like Jermale Hines is putting himself in the conversation for more playing time… while Ray Small is putting himself in the conversation for opening the door for an incredibly stupid turnover on special teams for catching the last two punts in traffic.

Ah yes… great play from the offensive line on 4th and 1.

    Wow.

This is goddam pitiful. There had better be some asses gtting chewed at halftime. I guess the good news is that Tressel isn’t showing anything to Pete Carroll.

    Hmm… hmmm…

Not at all expected. Ohio showed up for this game (creds to them). Let’s hope we see the Buckeyes in the 2nd half. Flat-flat-flat…

    sigh…

As much as I like Mo Wells as a scat-back type runner, he is by no means an everydown back. Good thing the O-line is getting off their fat asses to block someone. BTW, nice hook on Xtra point. What’s up with Saine, still hobbled?

Dare I hope??? Nice fumble recovery!

Oh boy, we’re trailing Ohio University entering the 4th quarter. Oh boy.

Why is Chris Speilman the new Andrea Kramer?

Why has ESPN chosen AC/DC as the band of choice for football? I’ve heard Highway to Hell, Thunderstruck, and You Shook Me All Night Long

    Nice game by the way…

Ray Small! Having a good day!!

Jason, that lucky bastard, called it. I’ll be hitting him up for lottery numbers shortly.

Herron, Small and Sanzy have been the MVPs of the game. Lawrence Wilson looked ready to play. Everyone else, though? Hmm…

Eventually, Terrelle is going to have to learn how to throw it under pressure. More one-reads than I’d like to see, but he’s killing clock and that’s good.

  17. 17 Jason

Sanzy a player of the game for a 4/32 day? Your man-crush is growing out of hand, my friend.

  18. 18 Vico

Well, who else on the offense would you give a game ball too? Mo Wells? Saine? Hartline? Robiskie? The offensive line? That was woeful for the most part. Sanzenbacher at least gets some credit for being a net positive throughout the game.

  19. 19 Jason

I’m hard-pressed to think of anyone that would merit offensive MVP, actually.

    one word: embarassing

I need to go wash my eyes out with soap to get rid of all the ugly I just witnessed.
