Better Know A Buckeye: Terrelle Pryor

late August 2007 – mid September 2007: Talkin’ visits

By this time, Terrelle was beginning his senior season of football for the Jeannette Jayhawks, hoping to build on their WPIAL AA title and state championship run by trying to get the double.  On the recruiting end, by August 29, Terrelle Pryor was already sure of one of his official visits. He scheduled his first official visit to Ohio State for their November 3rd game against Wisconsin.  In the same breath, he noted that he was sure he wanted to visit WVU, but didn’t know if he wanted to visit during one of their Thursday games or during the Backyard Brawl against Pitt.  He later expressed interest in visiting Texas, again thinking that Texas’ style of offense fits his strengths.  As with WVU, though, he wasn’t sure when he wanted to visit, just that he wanted to check things out because he liked what he was hearing from Texas’ offensive coordinator and QB coach (Greg Davis).

Terrelle Pryor, during his 2007 visit to Penn State
The only visit Terrelle Pryor managed to take at this time was to Penn State for their September 8 pillowfight against Notre Dame, much to the delight of Penn State fans who may have been thinking that the top Western PA prospect was slipping from their grasps.  Of course, it’s important to clarify the nature of the visit.  Terrelle was certainly not using one of his officials on the trip.  Indeed, he wasn’t even the main subject of the visit.  Mike Matt1, a fullback-linebacker on his Jeannette team, was going to the Penn State game on an unofficial visit, along with his dad. Terrelle just asked to tag along because, though he’s seen a couple Penn State games before, he wanted to see the atmosphere for the Notre Dame game.

Penn State fans are no dopes, and they knew he was coming.  Accordingly, Penn State fans put on a show to swoon Pryor to the Nitts.  Pryor admitted that the fans, mostly clad in white for a declared “White Out” got his attention by chanting his name.  Lavarr Arrington was also on the sidelines, and Pryor admitted that it was “pretty cool” to meet him and take some pictures with him.  Though asked if he was starstruck over meeting one of Penn State’s most beloved players and one of the all-time Western PA football greats, Terrelle noted:

“When I was up at Ohio State I met Troy Smith and Kirk Herbstreit, so I am kind of used to it. But it was a neat feeling.”

The visit certainly wasn’t enough to blow Terrelle away, and the average QB play of Anthony Morrelli didn’t help things either.  However, Terrelle began to express that he wanted to finally whittle his list, thinking that his recruitment had become a little too stressful.  The Penn State visit may have been just enough to secure a spot in his top 6.

Dude. This is 27 pages single-spaced at .7 inch margins, when taking out the images.

    Dude.

You’re not expecting anyone to read this, are you? This must be the longest post in the history of college football blogging. When was the last time you went out anyways?

  3. 3 Jason

Wow. I now have plans for the evening.

I’d give you two thumbs up, if I weren’t wasting my time giving my computer screen hand gestures. Great work, man.

Hmm, I don’t know when the last time I got out was, but 27 pages single-spaced? That’s a little exorbitant even for me.

Great article. I think you know more about Terrelle than he does. Thanks for all the hard work – this had to take a while to finish.

Speaking of pp 18, is Strawberry Mansion not the coolest school name ever?

Whew! I’m exhausted! I squandered an hour of my employer’s time, and still had to finish it at home. So many cool links to follow. Naturally, after getting my fix, I can only ask … nah, nevermind. Take a few days off, then we’ll all hit you up for the next, and last, BKAB.

I think I’ve read about this somewhere else (if not, I can’t believe I’m the only one with the idea), but on the subject of the signing day postponement that got everybody so freaked out/made Terrelle look like an attention whore: it seems reasonable to assume that TP knew where he was going but didn’t want to deal with hostile crowds at PSU during the state basketball tourney and simply waited till after it was over to announce.

That was a monster of a piece, nice work.

Take a look at what Joe Paterno (allegedly) told Terrelle Pryor early into his recruitment.

    - pay careful attention to the stories of him stealing the ball of the tee, and hurdling a would-be tackler at the 5 yard line and landing 3 yards in the end zone.

Dude, you made it onto The Big Lead and SI’s Campus Clicks.

    Dude.

Bandwidth gets chewed through, but no one’s contributed to the Give Us Money Campaign. That gets a dismayed “Dude”.
