mmm… vintage Ohio State commercial…

If you love poofy hair and Buckstaches, I think you’ll like this vintage Ohio State commercial from the 1980s.

I’m not sure there’s a good reason regarding why Ohio State stopped running this commercial during their televised football games… and no, I don’t consider “well, you can’t run the same commercial forever, can you?” a valid response because I think any commercial from my youth (especially that board game called “Crossfire” and that “Skip it” thing that all the girls I knew had) is timeless. Just like this commercial.

Besides, it’s infinitely better than that crap Ohio State was airing two or three years ago. You know the one I’m talking about: with the random students talking about doing something great and just talking about their silly little lives that I care nothing about. I actually knew one of those people on those commercials. Let’s just say I wouldn’t recommend this particular character to be a face of The Ohio State University.

Oh, and I have no idea what that monstrous contraption is at the 15 second mark of the commercial. But with that said, I do want it displayed prominently in every Homecoming parade.

That large contraption was built by the mechanical engineering department as a project for a national competition sponsored by NASA. It sat, in its component pieces, in the basement of Baker Systems Engineering for almost a decade before it was carted out and pitched.

My office was in the Journalism Building, just across the street, and I remember it being carried out of there. HUGE device.

I posted a message, but I got an error and don’t really feel like re-typing it.

This is my favorite OSU commercial that I can remember:

I would like to think that OSU was investing in transformers in the 80s. That is the best possible explanation for that huge device shown at the 15 second mark.

ideally some rich alumni should get that thing running again and just let it roam campus
