Monday morning YouTubes
If there was ever a lazier excuse for a post, I haven’t heard of it. That said, I spent the weekend uploading some YouTubes for your Monday morning drive-time commute1. Included here: the gamewinning TD drive against Michigan in 2002, Will Allen’s game-ending interception against Michigan in 2002, Dimitrious Stanley’s 72yd TD catch against Arizona State in the 1997 Rose Bowl and two Michael Wiley clips from the Missouri game in 1998. If you don’t want to waste time with the post, you can hop over to YouTube-o-vision and start watching the videos.
Oh, and I’ve started using my own personal intros to some of these clips, like Keith formerly of Buckeye Commentary, because of some frustration with other people leeching these and uploading them as their own. It’s a 9 second intro with an OHD graphic with Frank Crumit singing over it. I think it’s nice, but if it’s deemed unreasonably long, I’ll reconsider it for future videos.
The Michigan clips come by request and bring back fond memories because, well, I was a freshman at Ohio State at the time and was there for that game and indeed all of the 2002 home games that coincided with the quarter system2. I was sitting in the first 3 rows in Block O for this game, having secured those nicer seats for helping a friend of mine distribute those little chip hats you see in the audience to the passersby on Lane. Having gotten up early to help someone who was actually in the Block O student organization, I got to be pretty close to the action as compensation.
Mo Hall’s touchdown was particularly special. I remember most of the area in Block O was rather anxious, and when the ball was snapped, everyone kind of collectively held their breath. Except for me, because I was so stunned at the playcall that I blurted out an incredulous “OPTION?!” that was probably audible for a row or two behind me. Of course, bedlam commenced once we all realized that Mo Hall scored.
But seriously, the option? I never saw that play coming. Apparently Michigan didn’t either.
So, without further stalling, here’s the whole TD drive that put the Buckeyes up 14-9 on the Wolvereenies and eventually won the game.
The Will Allen pick was nice, of course. He had a habit of finishing things in 2002, be it Cincinnati, Michigan, or Willis McGahee’s career. After Will Allen finished Michigan, my friend and I were one the first people from the Block O seating grouping to storm the pitch. I was pepper-sprayed as a consequence. I wasn’t doing anything bad, far from it. I just happened to be frontline in the vortex on the field that sucked people to the south-end goal posts… and happened to get there right as the cops lost their patience. I would gladly take another shot, though, if it meant more glory for the Buckeyes followed.
I also uploaded another TD clip from the 1997 Rose Bowl against Arizona State. In this clip, Joe Germaine’s 72yd TD strike to Dimitrious Stanley serves as an effective response to Arizona State’s FG drive that had just given them their first lead of the game at 10-7. After the extra point, the Buckeyes take a 14-10 lead with more than 10 minutes left to go in the third quarter.
Lastly, I uploaded two clips of Michael Wiley from the 1998 Missouri game. I watched this game last night and was kind of bored by it, but it was still, well, something to do3. The Bucks were their own worst enemy in the first half (that Germaine fumble that was scooped up by Carlos Posey for a TD was infuriating for me, even knowing that the Buckeyes won the game), but rebounded for a 35-14 victory over the Missouri Tigers. No big plays in the game, just long drives.
That said, Michael Wiley had a career game, rushing for 209 yards and 2 TDs. I included one of those touchdowns and 80 of those yards in these two clips (21 yards on the TD, 59 yards on the other play). First up, the TD play is a brilliant draw play that had everyone fooled, even the cameraman.
The 59 yards here are all Michael Wiley’s improvisation of a play off the left side of the line.

- in other words, I wasn’t there for Wazzu, Texas Tech and one of the other home games [↩]
- seriously, there isn’t anything to do in Alabama on most nights… let alone a Sunday night [↩]
Good stuff. You got me motivated to upload a lot of the stuff I had taped from back in the day. I’m just starting to sort through it, but I’ll try not to overlap what you’ve put up.
heh, I just got my hands on some Earle Bruce stuff, as well as the 1999 Sugar Bowl. Other than that, though, if you’ve got it, UPLOAD IT. The only reason I upload what I have to YouTube is because no one else has. And from the looks of it, the 1998 WVU game is infinitely more interesting than the 1998 Mizzou game. I’m jealous
Curious, though, what do you have?
The new intro on the Youtube clips is so good that you should consider separately uploading the entire radio edit/extended dance remix version* with Cumit doing the whole thing from start to finish. That is great.
* Produced by Timbaland.
Man, Tom Nugent sure was great wasn’t he? Didn’t hold a candle to San Antonio Holmes.
Maybe 20 random games from 1998-2002, including some of what you’ve put up. Nothing exotic, unfortunately. They’re all on VHS, though and finding the time to import and edit is what’s challenging. Plus, I’m concerned that my setup is degrading the quality. I found a service that will convert them to digital (VCD) for $5/per and may go that route because the internet needs these old games.
I would love to see the 2002 Wisky game if you have it. That game is nowhere to be found online and I think it’s arguably Tressel’s best victory of that regular season (and his only victory over Alvarez). I say arguably because, well, with so many epic games played that season each with it’s own twists and turns, saying which one was the “best” would be like trying to decide who is favourite son or daughter.
My personal favourite was Penn State in 2002. That Gamble pick-six still resonates for me as the loudest I ever heard Ohio Stadium (Gabby was telling me he noticed the same thing too when he came up for the Penn State game way back when). And that place erupted… wow.
I won’t upload anything from that era (1998-2002) to respect your collection and allow 11w to add to its A/V Club. Curious, though, do you have that 1999 Sugar Bowl game against A&M? I have it and that’s on my priority list to upload.
As for me, I’m focusing on Woody and Earle Bruce. I’m particularly disappointed that these old Bruce era games aren’t available for easy consumption like some of the Cooper era games and Tressel games. I’m obsessed with finding Bruce era games because, well, I’m 23 years old and when Earle Bruce dies, I’m convinced no Buckeye fan who came of age during Jim Tressel is going to have any idea who he was or what he accomplished at Ohio State. Granted, he’s no Woody or Tressel, but he gave us some good moments and a great run in 1979 for which Charles White can burn in the hottest part of hell (my dad had just relocated to Los Angeles in 1979 and was at that Rose Bowl game as well. I think he sends similar regards, but you would have to ask him.). Fans need to know more about Earle Bruce.
It’s just as good that you’re focusing on Cooper too. People need to know that there was more to the Cooper era than 2-10-1.
Oh, and that 1998 Penn State game looks like it was a treat too. Do you have that?
The 03 NC State game is a forgotten gem-it would be great if anyone had it
Dude, by all means, upload what you have as well. Don’t worry about stepping on any toes from my end.
Also, I do have the 1999 Sugar Bowl v. A&M and will try to get to that next.
From what I can see on my desk here, I have the following:
1997 - Rose Bowl
1998 - WVU, Iowa, Michigan, A&M Sugar Bowl
1999 - Hoops: St. Johns, UCONN
2002 - Northwestern, San Jose State, Penn State, Minny, Michigan, Fiesta Bowl
2003 - Washington, SDSU
There are some others I haven’t pulled out yet, and I’m finding that on some tapes there are games that I forgot to put on the tape label, so there could be additions for sure.
The 1998 Iowa game is a gem. There should be some good clips from that. The best clips come from the road games, in my opinion. Nothing like several big plays to deflate the home crowd and let them know who’s boss.
