Darrell Givens becomes no. 9 in 2009
The Buckeyes pick up at least one commitment from the Spring Game attendees, and it was honest to God the one I least expected. Yet, Darrell Givens — CB recruit from Indian Head, Maryland, formerly of Friendly where Lamaar Thomas hails — saw enough to make a commitment immediately following Spring Game festivities. With him and Barnett now in the fold, Ohio State surely has two of the top 10 2009 cornerbacks.
It’s not clear as of this writing what may have pulled Givens in. I do know Givens was a childhood Hurricanes fan, and I thought that’s where he would eventually land. Yet, it could be a combination of fortuitous factors, and I’m convinced Lamaar Thomas (friend and former HS teammate of Givens) had at least something to do with it. Elsewhere, he has said that he’s a big fan of Jim Tressel and is very close with Lamaar Thomas. Combined with an enjoyable Spring Game atmosphere, Givens probably felt like he had seen enough to make a commitment. More will come out I’m sure, but in the mean time, he did volunteer this:
“Yes, I did commit to Ohio State today,” Givens admitted. “It just felt like the right place for me and I just fell in love with Ohio State.”
…
“I told all the coaches today that I wanted to be a Buckeye,” Givens said. “I spoke to Jim Tressel and also to coach [Taver] Johnson, coach [Luke] Fickell and coach [Darrell] Hazell. I’m very happy to be a Buckeye.”
No clue whether or not he takes visits elsewhere in the summer. I know he wanted to.
For anyone who may not know how prized this recruit is for the coaching staff, or what a Maryland kid could possibly mean to the Buckeyes’ plans, it is worth mentioning that he was the first cornerback given an offer in 2009.

Sweetness.
any word on Dorian Bell?
I’ve read only good things. Nothing official yet. I don’t think his recruitment goes on much longer.
Maryland was a Slave State, so this counts as Southern Speed.
